Sisters for Christmas!

Until now, I haven’t divulged this very important news – partly because I thought it too personal and partly because I’m still processing the magnitude of recent events in my life and the life of my family. Holidays of course are all about family and having spent most of the day with mine I feel it impossible not to include them here…

I have a sister! For those of you who know me personally, this is big since prior to December 6th, I didn’t have one, at least not in any real sense. My mother immigrated to the United States from Vietnam in 1975, and for various reasons too complicated to explain in this little post, she left behind my sister, Nga. Nga was raised by her paternal grandparents and for the last 40 years of her life has been going about living without my mother in her life. For the past eight years or so my mother had been working on bringing Nga, her husband, and three children to the U.S. On December 6th she succeeded and we all went to the airport to pick up our new family. A reunion long overdue and certainly the highlight of this year for us personally. So this Christmas, we had five more people at the table and even with all the squishing and disorganization this was without a doubt one of the best Christmases the I can remember. I have a SISTER!!!! Someday, maybe that won’t have such a surprisingly wonderful ring to it, but until then I’m just going to keep saying it and you’ll just have to humor me, deal?

In honor of my sister and the Christmas holiday, here is my favorite scene from the 1954 musical White Christmas, starring Bing Crosby and Danny Kaye. Even without the plot to set this up I hope you can appreciate the expressions on their faces, especially at the end where I suspect they had a hard time keeping semi-straight faces so as not to ruin the shot.

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to all, especially Nga and her family. We are so very happy to have you in our lives and I look forward to the Christmases to come!

Clafoutis – always a good idea, always… :)

It’s no secret that Alicia Paulson is my favorite blogger on the net these days. Quite frankly she has been ever since I discovered her over the summer. I feel the need to credit her now, not only because she is an inspiration to all people of my sort (crafty?) but also because she lives a wonderfully warm and well-rounded life. I particularly enjoy her cooking experiments and subsequent lovely photography of one of my favorite things – FOOD! As I write this post, I have her clafoutis recipe in the oven. I’ve made this countless times now, for all sorts of company and sometimes just for myself. Each time it has either impressed or comforted  - and the recipe is often requested when the last morsel of custard is scraped from the dish…

Ladies ( and gents), here you are – Clafoutis! I’ve followed her suggested modifications: splash of vanilla, pinch of salt, and added one of my own – cinnamon! My pictures from this morning’s blueberry version aren’t nearly as lovely as Alicia’s… but the clafoutis was delicious as always…

Perfect blueberries before the batter…

Into the oven it goes….

Puffy and golden right out of the oven…

I just love the idea of letting something cool on the window sill with the window slightly cracked… what a lovely morning it was… and yummy too!

Also, here’s a little whimsical Debussy to help you start the day. :)

Oh Yoko?… Oh Yes!

Awhile back I was bored at work and decided to have a little contest on my profile page. I wrote a note asking my friends to guess my favorite John Lennon song. After almost 30 posts and more than 30 guesses (some people guessed more than once – cheaters!) my dear friend Peyton guessed correctly! Actually, as he later pointed out, it was quite the educated guess since we’d had a conversation about John Lennon before and I had mentioned the song. Well, for your excellent memory and thoughtful listening, Peyton – you are a WINNER! He has won some lovely jewelry of mine which he intends to give to his sisters who are very dear to him…

I was reminded of that song when another dear friend of mine asked about the contest tonight just before dinner. I tried to explain as best I could why I love that song. My explanation came to this – I’ve always hoped for a love like John and Yoko had – a love so great that it makes you love everyone, a love so great you wish to share it with others, a love so great you wish to make the world a better place. That two people can love each other so much and in such a pure and giving way that they even wish to work towards world peace together – well, that is a rare and wonderful thing and I can only hope we will all be so lucky!

Happy Birthday Cat!!! I, too, am very glad we are friends… and look I’m even posting because you missed reading my blog!

Holidays + Crafts = Happiness!

It’s official! I’ve been accepted to the DC Rollergirls holiday craft show and Bash (pun intended, I’m certain). This is super exciting for me A) because the DC Rollergirls are hottt and awesome, B) because now I don’t have to clean my apartment to have a holiday party here, and C) because they only accepted 10 crafters! – can you believe I made it in?!?

I know, I know – I should be more confident about my ‘craft’ but c’mon, ONLY 10 were accepted. Basically that means that I rock. And who wouldn’t be excited about that? See you at the bash!

More reasons to attend the show – it’s at one of my favorite venues in DC and you can drink while you shop! How’s about that for awesome?!
